Incorporated in News South Wales on October 18, 1949, to amalgamate the interests of Thorpes Ltd, and Mungo Scott Pty Ltd and Keys & Co Pty Ltd, flour milling and stock feed businesses. In 1962 operations were extended in Victoria with the acquisition of John Darling and Sons (Australia) Ltd. In October 1965 the issue capital of Maize Products Pty Ltd was acquired. From its early years the company diversified its activities. In the late 1940s the company acquired Vegetable Oils Pty Ltd, which produced margarine and other vegetable oil products; later Mowbray Industries Limited was formed as a holding company for these interests, which extended throughout Australia with brands such as 'Daffodil', 'Tulip' and 'Meadow Lea'. In the late 1950s the company started to acquire bakeries. During 1969, the group underwent a rearrangement amongst its wholly-owned subsidiaries whereby trading assets were transferred to a central operating company and trading was maintained through various branches under separate business names. During 1979, the company acquired from the Marrick Holdings Pty Ltd, its retail industrial margarine, cooking fats, bottled oils and groceries selling under the names 'ETA', 'Mother’s Choice', 'Praise', 'Pilot' and 'Chefol'. Also acquired were Eta Foods and the PDF Grocery businesses. In Feb 1981 Allied Mills acquired from Henry Jones (IXL) Ltd the Kensington Flour Mill and the associated packaged consumer and health food business, which formed part of that company’s group. In 1984, the company established its operations in California, USA, by marketing of the ‘Meadow Lea’ edible oils products. On 30 April 1986 it was taken over by Fielder Gillespie Davis Limited. | |
