Originally registered, in England, in 1902 as S. Hoffnung & Co (1902) Ltd the company changed its name in 1904 to S. Hoffnung & Co Ltd. At the request of the company it was removed from the Stock Exchange listing in 1949. The company was acquired by Burns, Philp and Co Ltd in 1981.

N.B. A First World War Memorial Tablet to staff who served is on display at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
