Summary

The Reserve Bank Act 1959 created the Reserve Bank of Australia to carry on the central banking functions of the Commonwealth Bank; other legislation separated the commercial banking and savings banking activities into the newly-created Commonwealth Banking Corporation. The Act took effect from early 1960.
