Details

The company was formed to acquire the newspaper publishing business of J. L. Bonython & Co., which was founded in 1858. It diversified into a number of allied fields including commercial television and radio broadcasting, general printing and packaging and computer graphics. The company published The Advertiser and The Chronicle newspapers. It also published The Sunday Mail in the partnership with News Ltd.

Registered as a public company on January 18 1929. A take over offer from News Ltd was rejected in 1959. In January 1964 a successful offer was made for Vuepak Holding Ltd., an Adelaide packaging firm. In 1966 the printing business Thornquest Press Pty, Ltd was acquired.

The Advertising group underwent reorganization during the 1980/81 period resulting in the following divisional structure: a Magazine division (which was new), a Printing division, a continuous Forms division and a packaging division.

Following the successful takeover bid by the Herald & Weekly Times Ltd the company was removed from the Australian Stock Exchange on 13 April 1988.
