Incorporated by a special act of the Victorian Parliament in 1878 which amalgamated the City of Melbourne Gas and Coke Company, the South Melbourne Gas Company and the Collingwood, Fitzroy and District Gas and Coke Company. In 1950 by another act of the Victorian Parliament the company amalgamated with the Brighton Gas Company to form the statutory authority the Gas and Fuel Corporation of Victoria.
