The company was incorporated in Victoria as Hoyts Theatres (NSW) Ltd in 1929. It changed its name to Hoyts Theatres (NSW) Pty Ltd in 1983 and to Hoyts Entertainment Ltd in 1987. It was listed on the ASX in 1987 and adopted its present name in 1993.
The company was formed as an investment company. Following the restructuring of the Hoyts group in 1987, Hoyts Entertainment acquired Hoyts Television Services Pty Ltd, Hoyts Distribution Pty Ltd, Val Morgan & Co (Aust) Pty Ltd and a 65% interest in Hoyts Media Ltd.
In 1993 the group's national radio network FM Australia Ltd was placed in receivership and sold, and Hoyts changed its name to Television Media after a capital and debt reconstruction in which Hoyts Theatres ceased to be a major shareholder of the company.
In 1994 the company agreed to pay $10.5m for the North Ryde studio site leased and managed by wholly owned subsidiary Global Television Pty Ltd.
